Community Partner: No Longer Bound The men arrive one by one at No Longer Bounds (NLB) campus on the outskirts of metro Atlanta, heads bowed, bodies worn and hearts broken. Drugs or alcohol addiction having ravaged their family relationships, careers, personal finances you name it. Addiction strikes at the heart of what we hold most dear: our health and our families. And addiction doesnt discriminate; it affects people from all walks of life. For many, addiction has a stealthy start, beginning with alcohol, marijuana or prescription painkillers. These gateway drugs can mushroom out of control and linger for years before help is sought. Sometimes, help is never sought. Many are surprised to learn that drug overdose kills more people than automobile accidents or guns. Overdose deaths are reaching pandemic levels. This past June, The New York Times published, Drug Deaths in America are Rising Faster Than Ever, with the following sobering statistics: In 2016, drug overdose deaths in the U.S. saw an estimated 19% increase over 2015 the largest annual increase ever recorded in the U.S. Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death among Americans under fifty. Over two million Americans are estimated to be dependent on opioids, and an additional 95 million used prescription painkillers in the past year, which is more than the number of people who used tobacco. In the dark world of addiction, NLB shines as a beacon of hope. Throughout its 26-year history, over 1,200 men have earned a second chance at life through NLB, which is a faith-based, residential regeneration center for men with drug and alcohol addiction. Located in Cumming, GA, the twelve-month program is intensive and effective: approximately 70% will graduate. Considered by many to be one of the leading faith-based regeneration centers for addiction recovery in the country, NLB is home to 42 adult-male residents. Additionally, NLB offers an optional ten-month internship program, where graduates stay on to mentor and serve those in regeneration. NLB also offers Family Recovery classes and support for those transitioning back into society. In order to generate funds, NLB operates the following four industries to help keep intake fees low and provide work opportunities for residents: NLB Furniture Custom-designed, reclaimed furniture made by residents; the retail store is located in Cumming (NLBFurniture.com) NLB Thrift Upscale thrift stores in Cumming and Woodstock, featuring a large selection of furniture, home accessories and clothing. Book Review: Before We Were Yours By Annell Gerson Fans of Orphan Train, Invention of Wings, One Thousand White Women, and other historical fiction novels that reveal little known events in the archives of American history, need look no further for their next MUST read. Lisa Wingates new novel, Before We Were Yours, is an unforgettable fictionalized story based on the true account of the Tennessee Childrens Home Society (TCHS) and Georgia Tann, a woman who, between 1920 and 1948, kidnapped and sold, under the guise of adoption, over 5,000 children. Because of neglectful, abusive conditions, she most likely also caused the deaths of over 500.Before We Were Yours is told through the eyes of Rill Foss, a young child in 1939, and Avery Stafford, a present-day young attorney from a powerful South Carolina family. In 1939, Rill and her four younger siblings are living on their parents shanty boat on the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee. Due to complications during childbirth, the children are left on the boat under the watch of a friend while their parents seek medical help in town. The Foss children, most with beautiful blonde hair, are prime candidates for Tanns black-market enterprise. When Avery, whos on the fast track to take over her fathers senate seat, meets May Crandall at a nursing home in Aiken, SC, a picture in Mays room reminds Avery of her grandmother. Curiosity leads her to investigate Mays life, and thus begins a journey through a long-hidden family history. Readers follow the longstanding prestige and reputation of the Stafford family alongside the defenseless Foss siblings. Tann did place some children living in deplorable, dangerous and abusive conditions into loving and financially secure homes, but mostly, with the help of corrupt officials, she seized children, some literally off the front porch of their homes, leaving parents grief-stricken, without due process, or the financial means to fight to get their children back. Though Before We Were Yours reveals a notorious scandal in American History, it is also a novel of hope, the power of family, and the healing derived from truth.

Crabapple Physical Therapy Life Can Feel Great Again By Cindi Braun A High-Tech Practice with a Down-to-Earth Atmosphere When you or a member of your family are injured or in pain, the last thing you want to do is travel far for relief, or spend weeks finding the right specialist to help you. Families in the surrounding downtown Crabapple community now have pain relief close to home where they will be treated by an esteemed and accomplished physical therapist with a proven record for getting results. Kim Chastain, a doctor of physical therapy, has earned recognition and respect from physicians and patients over the past 23 years while in private practice in Cobb and Cherokee counties as well as with various leadership positions. Having earned high trust from the medical community, Georgias largest hospital healthcare system reached out to Dr. Chastain to be the executive director of their new outpatient rehabilitation division. After partnering with them in 2012 through acquisition of her company, OrthoSport Physical Therapy, Dr. Chastain developed a strategic plan and subsequently greatly expanded their outpatient rehabilitation footprint in Georgia. Not long after accomplishing that mission, Dr. Chastain found that she missed treating patients and the autonomy of private-practice life. She took several months to search for the right hometown atmosphere before deciding to go back into private practice. I found the right fit in this friendly and emerging community of downtown Crabapple, a community that my family has patronized for twenty years. Downtown Crabapple is close to my home, and the residents are forward-thinking in their family community planning. Our doctors and our sons school are here because were very happy with the family resources that are provided, said Dr. Chastain. Dr. Chastain said her dream is to help as many families as I can in the Crabapple area until Im old and my hands are worn out! She was so set on opening her practice in Crabapple, that she waited for months for a space to become available. When a sign was posted that one last office building was being built next to the new Milton City Hall, she called immediately. I am really looking forward to being here every day and getting to know the families of the Crabapple community, Dr. Chastain stated.During her 31 years as an orthopedic physical therapist, Dr. Chastain has become an invaluable resource for her patients. Her curious, empathetic and resourceful nature is what sets her apart from other therapists. There are so many hands-on and high-tech tools that I can use to help patients in the majority of cases. I never get tired of learning, and I never give up on my patients, she said. To stay current with evidence-based physical therapy, Dr. Chastain is an avid reader. Her mission is to provide treatment that will address what the patient states their goals are for therapy. Too often, patients are over- or under-treated only to reinjure a month later. So, Dr. Chastain strives to always choose the right techniques and tools, for the right amount of time, rather than try to fix what aint broken. She said, I must be a genuine and attentive listener for my patients. As a patient myself, I only return to a health practitioner when I feel that they really listened, understood what I needed and had a real solution for me. So, I live for those wonderful moments when a look of hope appears on my patients face. They know when the right questions are being asked and when Im on the right track to provide them with relief.Pain and loss of physical ability is debilitating and often negatively affects the patients entire family. Patients desperately want relief and are often exhausted from pain and long-term medications. They miss out on work and memory-making opportunities with friends and loved ones. So, when Dr. Chastain is successful in helping a patient, it actually helps the entire family. Most of us can relate to that. Its frustrating for me when patients tell me how much unnecessary and painful treatment theyve endured over months and years. Theres a better way, which is why research shows that before surgery or injections, quality physical therapy should be a patients first stop when faced with pain, injury or loss of physical ability, Dr. Chastain said. Among diagnoses such as neck or back pain, headaches, joint pain, sports injuries, arthritis, loss of balance with falls, or post-surgical pain or limitations, Dr. Chastains extensive skill set with modern technology is a true asset for her patients. I have equipped my practice with many hi-tech tools. We have the newest aquatic therapy technology with a multi-directional treadmill with many bells and whistles; the most powerful Lightforce Laser available for fast pain relief to any small or large body part; a computerized medical balance system for all ages, and the only research-based, computerized, low back testing and strengthening machine called the MedX, Dr. Chastain explained. The Lightforce Laser produces superior pain relief results for new onset or chronic pain of the joints and muscles. Crabapple Physical Therapy is the only physical therapy provider of LightForce Laser Therapy in the north Fulton area. Dr. Chastain is also certified in dry needling, which is another strong pain relief tool that uses very fine acupuncture needles. Crabapple Physical Therapy is designed for patients of every pain level, so that they can succeed without fear of increased pain with treatment.Crabapple PT treats patients of all ages with orthopedic and neurological issues, work injuries, athletic injuries, new onset or chronic pain, pre- and post-surgical issues, and older adults with balance issues or a history of falling. Dr. Chastain also treats neuro-pediatric patients with coordination, balance and physical challenges commonly seen with children on the autism spectrum. People ask me where my passion for PT comes from, and I answer with a patient story, Dr. Chastain said, as she described treating a gospel singer who had lost her ability to sing due to a severe neck injury. After being discharged, the patient stopped by to give Dr. Chastain her new CD that she was able to record without pain. Moments like that are why Im back in private practice. When I can make a difference, its food for my soul, and thats something that I want to experience every day.Kim Chastain BS, PT, DPT, Cert. DN, is the Founder and CEO of Crabapple Physical Therapy. Kim is a 1986 graduate from Hunter College in NY and earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2010. She is also Certified in dry needling and has been board-certified in orthopedics with the American Physical Therapy Association for twenty years. Crabapple Physical Therapy is currently accepting and scheduling new patients and is officially open the 2nd week of September. For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit CrabapplePT.com, or call 770-686-3700. Women First Rehabilitation #WeGotThis Solving Problems No One Talks About By Cyndi Braun If youre like most people, you dont hesitate to talk to friends about medical problems like a sore throat or an arthritic knee. But when it comes to pelvic issues, you probably hesitate, thinking you are the only one with this problem. Truth is, youre not alone. Young, old, or somewhere in between, chances are you (and many of your friends) have experienced a pelvic floor problem.Even though you might not want to talk about it, pelvic floor conditions can be and should be successfully treated. The specialists at Women First Rehabilitation have just the solution no matter what stage of life youre in.The Female Athlete> Fact 43% of female athletes have experienced leakage while engaging in their sport.> Patient Population = 15-40 years old> Results 70% of female athletes who experience incontinence are cured after pelvic floor rehabilitation.> Since 2012, I have struggled with issues related to the musculature of my hips and pelvis. For four years, I trained hard, lifted weights, ran a marathon, raced bicycles, did yoga; yet my list of issues got longer! Low back pain, painful hips, incontinence, and then the last straw hemorrhoids. I was embarrassed and frustrated. Dr. Bolden quickly showed me that it wasnt weak muscles that had me in this predicament; it was the way in which certain muscles were so incredibly tight. Through specific relaxation techniques and dry needling, Dr. Bolden had me back to feeling like a normal person in about four visits. LynnReproductive Services> Fact 50% of women have diastasis recti that does not resolve after they give birth, and 58% of new moms have pelvic floor dysfunction.> Patient Population = Mid 20s to late 30s> Results 71.9% of patients who received pelvic physical therapy during pregnancy and/or immediately post-partum improved in stress urinary incontinence, diastasis recti and/or pelvic pain.> For two years, I had been having lower back pain due to post-partum diastasis recti, and Id given up hope that anything would reduce the pain. Dr. Bolden took the time to listen to my issues, gave me exercises to work on at home, and used special techniques to relieve pain. Within a couple months, my abdominal muscles have closed significantly, and my lower back pain has resolved. I am now able to hold my kids, run, and walk without any back pain. AnnaBladder Health> Fact Up to twelve million men and women have interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome). > Patient Population = Children to elderly (dependent on diagnosis)> Results 60-85% of patients with bladder conditions are adequately managed (absence of symptoms) or cured with pelvic floor therapy.> My physical therapist was treating me for lower back pain, and recommended I go to WFR for issues I was having with my bladder. When I saw Dr. Bolden the first time, I was experiencing intense pain and repercussions from use of antibiotics. Dr. Boldens wisdom, skill and caring approach sent me on a journey to good health again. JeanieWellness/Weight Loss> Fact 74% of Americans are considered overweight.> Patient Population = Anyone consuming the average American diet> Results 53% of individuals who used supervised weight loss plans lost more weight than those who tried on their own.> I would never have believed that following a simple eating plan could rid my body of inflammation and pain, and as an added bonus, I lost sixty pounds! Thank you! Vicki I went on a special diet about a month ago (under the direction of Women First), and noticed such a difference. My energy levels have gone up! Thank you so much for all your help. AnnaPain with Intimacy> Fact One in four women have pain with intimacy. > Patient Population = 20-60 years old> Results 74% of patients with painful intercourse significantly improve with pelvic floor physical therapy.> At first, I was skeptical as to how physical therapy could help with pain I had when my husband and I were intimate. I had, for many years, discussed this pain with my gynecologist, and there never seemed to be lasting relief. Thank you for taking the time to educate me on what my pelvic floor muscles were doing and how scar tissue from three C-sections played into my pain. I have also noticed that my urinary incontinence has completely resolved, too. DeMercy Dental Where Everybody Knows Your Name By Cyndi Braun A visit to DeMercy Dental in Roswell feels more like catching up with old friends. From the warm greeting at check-in, to the friendly hygienists, to the father-daughter dentist team, its no surprise that DeMercy Dental has been in the business of providing quality dental care for 31 years. Back in 1986, Dr. Jeff DeMercy established the practice with his wife, Tammy, managing the office and daughter, Amanda, greeting patients from her playpen behind the front desk. Fast-forward to 2017, and the scene repeats itself. Dr. Amanda Kossick now works side-by-side with her dad, mom manages the office, and Amandas two-year-old daughter stands ready to carry the dental business into the next generation, if she desires. Quality, Personal Care From the beginning, we have emphasized that we want everyone here to know patients names when they walk in the front door. They are never just patients; they are unique individuals, said Tammy DeMercy. Dr. DeMercy believes that a personal connection with patients is the key to quality care. We take the time to listen to our patients, empathize and understand what their issues are, and build a level of trust, said Dr. DeMercy. When we establish that trust, we can provide better quality care. Dr. Kossick joined the practice four years ago after graduating from the Medical College of Georgia. Many patients tell me that Im just like my dad, which I think is a huge compliment, said Dr. Kossick. My favorite part of being a dentist is taking care of people and putting them at ease. Dentistry fits my personality well, since Im very detail-oriented and enjoy doing things with my hands. Preventative Care for Better Health The practice offers standard dental services including dental exams and cleanings, oral cancer screenings, white fillings, oral surgery, dental bridges, dentures and periodontal disease care. Patients should have regular cleanings and check-ups to ensure dental health as well as general health. For example, some experts believe that severe gum disease may be linked to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or stroke. Preventing gum disease may improve a patients overall long-term health. Dentistry is very preventative in nature, said Dr. Kossick. Advancements in medicine and research allow dentistry to implement more comprehensive treatments that affect the whole persons health. Improving Smiles For patients whose smiles are not to their liking, cosmetic dentistry can make a big difference. Services include Invisalign, teeth whitening, smile makeover, porcelain veneers, dental bonding and dental implants. Invisalign is an option for patients who want to straighten teeth without wearing braces. Patients wear a series of different clear retainers for six months to two years. The process gradually shifts teeth and transforms smiles. Smile makeovers help patients with cracked, chipped, gapped, crooked or stained teeth. Working with the patient, dentists provide restorative and cosmetic dental procedures such as white fillings, dental bonding, porcelain veneers, dental crowns, braces, bridges and implants. Offering the Latest in Technology DeMercy Dental uses state-of-the-art dental technology, including intraoral cameras, electric handpieces, CEREC, digital X-rays and PerioLase. The equipment helps provide accurate diagnosis and treatment by detecting and identifying current or potential problems. If a patient has periodontal disease, especially if theres excessive tartar build-up and bone loss occurring, I use the PerioLase laser paired with traditional scaling to remove the tartar and get some regeneration of bone in those sites, said Dr. Kossick, who has advanced training in dental technology. Weve had great results and are pleased to be able to offer laser technology to our patients. PerioLase treats periodontal disease as well as other dental issues such as cold sores/canker sores, TMJ issues (jaw), gum disease, plaque buildup, painless injections, increased recovery from surgery and sensitive teeth. A Family Practice for Families Most of our patients are families themselves. Many start as young families, then grow and stay with us, adding children and grandchildren over the years, said Dr. Kossick. Our patients become an extension of our own family. DeMercy Dental welcomes new patients of all ages from toddlers to seniors. For more information, call or check the website. That is what attracted me the most about the field of orthopedics, said Dr. Jiang. I practice hand and upper extremity orthopedics, which means that I focus on the treatment of all conditions from the fingertips to the shoulder.Dr. Jiang commonly treats issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervains tendinitis, thumb arthritis, cubital tunnel syndrome, mallet finger, Dupuytrens contracture, trigger finger and broken bones. He provides arthritis care, non-operative treatment of orthopedic conditions, and minimally invasive procedures such as arthroscopy of the upper extremity. If people have a more advanced degenerative joint disease, he also performs joint replacements for the shoulder, elbow and wrist. Ive always enjoyed orthopedics because it allows me to take care of a diverse group of patients from young athletes, to patients who have arthritis in their joints, to those who sustain a traumatic injury, said Dr. Jiang. I customize the most ideal treatment plan for each patient. I enjoy helping make patients lives better by returning them to function. Dr. Stephen Rodes Sports Medicine Surgeon Dr. Stephen Rodes is the newest member of the team, joining the practice in 2017. A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, he has experience treating high school, college and professional athletes. He currently serves as a team physician at each of the high schools in Cherokee County, as well as Reinhardt College. Sports medicine is different than what most people think, said Dr. Rodes. In addition to treating younger athletes, it also includes treating rotator cuff tears in a 70-year-old patient, performing knee scopes for meniscus tears in a 40-year-old weekend warrior, or a variety of other injuries or age related problems. Dr. Rodes has expertise in minimally-invasive, arthroscopic treatment of shoulder, knee and elbow injuries as well as shoulder and knee replacement for arthritis. Im a hands-on type of guy, said Dr. Rodes. I enjoy helping patients get well and get back to doing the activities they enjoy. Dr. Brian Seng Hip and Knee Surgeon Dr. Seng believes in getting his patients back to activity as soon as possible. Board-certified in orthopedic surgery, he specializes in hips and knees. When nonsurgical treatments are exhausted, worn-out arthritic joints are then (and only then) considered replaceable. Dr. Seng offers a variety of non-surgical and conservative treatments including joint-lubricating injections (viscosupplementation). If surgery is needed, youre in good hands. Dr. Seng has expertise in minimally-invasive procedures including partial knee replacement and the direct anterior approach for total hip replacement. Direct anterior hip replacement is a less invasive way to do hip replacement surgery, said Dr. Seng. It allows patients to get back to normal activity quickly, with less pain and fewer complications. Dr. Seng offers hip replacement surgery on an outpatient basis and uses a rapid recovery program that focuses on educating patients prior to surgery and coordinating postoperative care to get patients moving and home much quicker. Outpatient surgery makes recovery easier for patients; they get to sleep in their own bed, eat their own food, said Dr. Seng. Its a better experience all around. Dr. Matthew Simmons Primary Care Sports Medicine Dr. Simmons is board-certified in sports medicine and family medicine and has experience serving as team physician for numerous schools, including Louisiana State University, Southern University and Parkview Baptist High School. He currently serves as Reinhardt Universitys team physician and coordinates the Sports Medicine Program for all six Cherokee County high schools. Sports medicine doctors are the gatekeepers to a variety of orthopedic issues. Were able to see patients of all age groups, and I enjoy the variety of cases that I see throughout the day and helping them return to the activities they enjoy, said Dr. Simmons. Having trained in family medicine and orthopedics, I tend to have a different scope and approach when I work with patients, said Dr. Simmons. For example, when a runner with a stress fracture comes in, I ask about running schedule, training, equipment and any medical problems that may be contributing to their injury giving patients a comprehensive level of care. What Makes This Practice Special? The physicians at Northside Cherokee Orthopedics & Sports Medicine are committed to serving the needs of the community that they themselves are a part of and offer personalized, one-on-one patient care in a warm environment. Patients get to see a doctor each time they come to the office and have access to the latest treatment modalities without having to travel far. My partners are great doctors and surgeons, but theyre even better people, said Dr. Rodes. We all spend a significant amount of time with each of the patients to ensure that we are able to answer all of their questions and address any concerns. Artist Profile: Barbara Jones Hewey Old School Horn Band By Barbara Jones Hewey Old School Horn Band, a nine-member local party band known for its classic rock and rhythm and blues, is back on stage this summer with three new members, some new twists on popular favorites and a renewed emphasis on songs that showcase the rich, full sound of its unique three-person horn section.According to guitarist Bedeke Cresci, the last of the bands founders still on the roster, the recharged and rejuvenated band is coming out strong with all the favorites its fans have come to expect and some surprises, including new members Bob Brooks (vocals), Justin Gorun (bass guitar) and Fred Jewell (keyboards). Still rocking the roster are Joy Boyd (vocals), Tim Fellenz (trumpet), Jill Freeman (trombone), Steve Weikle (saxophone) and Brad Wild (drums). The brainchild of Cresci and two of his friends, one of whom didnt even play an instrument at the time, the band formed in 2008 after a group scheduled to play at a neighborhood party cancelled at the last minute. The bands rapid growth and popularity exceeded their expectations.Based in Alpharetta, the band plays a wide range of music, but its emphasis is on 70s-era classic rock, which Cresci and some of the senior members of the band grew up enjoying. We play music we love, he explains. Favorite artists include Van Morrison, Joe Cocker and Steely Dan, plus Motown and rhythm and blues legends such as Otis Redding. They gravitate toward music with a strong horn component, including the Blues Brothers Soul Man, Chicagos Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? and Sam and Daves Hold On, Im Comin. Their most requested song? Bruce Springsteens Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out. In addition to popular hits, they play lesser-known gems. We try to do material that is a little more complex or that would not typically be played by other bands, Cresci says. He named The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys by Traffic, 5:15 by The Who, Jackie Wilson Said by Van Morrison and Them Changes by Buddy Miles as songs many bands wouldnt attempt because they require horns to sound their best.Cresci, who started playing the guitar in high school, comes from a musical family. His brother plays guitar, and his mother plays piano. While not a musician, his fathers love of classical music added to his interest in various genres, including Flamenco guitar. His early musical influences include Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Cresci was drawn to Garcias very improvisational approach to music. Despite the hard work involved, performing for Cresci and the other band members is a labor of love. Theres just something about playing music that both satisfies the soul and sets it free, he adds. Advice to young musicians just starting out? Play music that you love with people who you like thats when music is the best, Cresci advises.Rocks OnFor more information about the band, visit OldSchoolHornBand.com.
Studio 5 Salon & Spa Family-Friendly Salon Moves to Canton Historic District By Cyndi Braun If youre looking for a family-oriented hair salon that offers the latest hair styles and treatments, Studio 5 Salon & Spa is the place for you. They are now located off of two entrances, 145 W Main Street or 136 Archer Street in downtown Canton. Since 2001, Jennifer Davo has owned and operated the salon, which was previously located on North Street. The salon offers an array of color and style techniques that are individualized for each client. Expert stylists stay up-to-date on current trends through continued education. Family Approach In this industry, many salons are directed toward particular groups, like mens styles, childrens or adult-only, said Jennifer. We have clients who are two, and we have clients who are 92. If one person in a family becomes a client, we often end up doing the whole family. So, we offer services for the entire family, and we also involve our own families in the salon. In fact, family-friendly extends to employees: eight women on staff are mother and daughter combos including Jennifer and her step-daughter Makayla. Born in Canton and raised in Jasper and Ellijay, Jennifer was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school. At the age of sixteen, she enrolled in Pickens Tech to learn Cosmetology, graduating before she was eighteen years old. She worked for five years at other salons, then opened Studio 5 just prior to her twenty-third birthday. I felt like some salons were trying to be so trendy and edgy, and I just wanted more of a family environment, Jennifer said. Having my own salon made it possible for me to focus on quality and building relationships with clients. Building Relationships The emphasis on relationships and customer service is evident the moment a client walks into the door. A front desk employee welcomes each person to the salon, and stylists are quick to say hello. We welcome every client who walks through the door, and we strive to provide fantastic customer service, and our goal is that our client walks out with a great experience, said Jennifer. Stylists get to know their clients so well that they are familiar with each clients hair and personality. They help clients determine the right style that best suits them, and they take the time to teach clients how to take care of their hair and new style once they get home. Doing hair is not like taking a fast-food order and putting a burger and fries in a bag to go. Every client is unique. In order to offer quality service, you have to care about each person, and you have to build relationships, said Jennifer. For example, when Jennifer found out that a family member of one of her stylists was struggling with hair loss, she wanted to help. She became an EvolveTM-certified stylist, so that her salon could offer this semi-permanent solution for women with hair loss. Besides helping clients, Studio 5 reaches out to young people being served by three programs of Goshen Valley, a Canton-based organization that helps vulnerable youth and families. Studio 5 helps the youth get ready for the prom every year. Hair Services Hair Cutting & StylingStylists provide haircuts and styles for children, juniors, men and women. They also trim bangs and offer updos and conditioning treatments. Color & HighlightingClients can take advantage of color and highlighting services at Studio 5 including single process, chromatic, mens color, partial and full foils. In addition, stylists are highly trained and experienced in Balayage, Ombre and Sombre. EvolveTM VolumizerFor women suffering from hair loss, Studio 5 offers EvolveTM Volumizer, a semi-permanent hair piece that adds volume and texture without chemicals. Brazilian BlowoutThis anti-frizz/smoothing treatment helps people with thick, wavy hair achieve the nearly impossible: smooth, shiny hair. The treatment improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective layer around the hair shaft. After about twelve weeks, the natural curl pattern returns with no line of demarcation of new hair growth. Hair ExtensionsHair extensions provide volume, length and versatility. Studio 5 offers a wide selection of I-Tip hair extensions, which are installed by clamping each hair extension using microbeads. I-Tip extensions require no chemicals, glue or heat, which means little to no damage to natural hair. For More Information With Jennifers emphasis on a family-friendly approach, Studio 5 offers old-fashioned values and quality service for the entire family. Adult Sports Leagues Because Maybe Your Glory Days Haven't Passed You By! By Julie Senger Who says that just because youre an adult that you must stop playing recreational or competitive team sports? In fact, adulthood is as good a time as any to play sports for many reasons. First of all, you no longer have to worry about how youre getting to and from practices and games; you can totally drive yourself! No more relying on moms taxi or carpooling with your neighbor! Also, you no longer have to worry about impressing your parents no more looking over to the sidelines or grandstands to see if mom or dad saw that amazing play you just made (or to see if they saw you rib-cage it while going for that fly ball that you missed)! All kidding aside, the biggest reasons why now is as good a time as any to take part in a sport is because its physically and mentally healthy for you. Just be sure you obtain your physicians consent before starting any new physical activity. According to StateOfObesity.org (Adult Obesity in the United States), Georgia is tied with Wisconsin for having the nineteenth worst adult obesity rate in the U.S. as of September 2016 (Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi rank 1st-3rd, respectively, in case you were wondering). Over thirty percent of adults in Georgia are considered medically obese, meaning they have a body mass index (BMI) of thirty or higher. This means a large percentage of adults in Georgia need to eat less and exercise more. Of course, for most of us, thats easier said than done. But, in terms of exercise, wouldnt it be fun to get your cardio in by running up and down a basketball court, crossing up your opponent to get inside the paint to make that sweet lay up, scoring two points for your team? Think youre too old to dribble up and down the court? Well, check out the San Diego Splash (ESPN.com/espnw/video/19395401/san-diego-splash). The Splash is a womens basketball team for which you must be at least eighty years old to play. You read that correctly; eighty was not a typo. In addition to the physical advantages of playing a sport, there are also mental advantages. Physical activity releases endorphins (your bodys happy chemical), which helps reduce depression, stress, insomnia and anxiety. It also boosts self-confidence, brain power/concentration/memory skills, creativity and energy level (The Top 7 Mental Benefits of Sports, Healthline.com). So, why not grab your buddy from the office, and join a local kickball team? You can release some work-related stress, clear your head, and allow your creative juices to start flowing, which may help you come up with a new way, (anything other than another PowerPoint presentation), to present your latest brilliant idea in the next company meeting. Finally, theres a reason that so many companies invest in team-building retreats for their employees. There are definitely some positive things to be gleaned from being a part of a team. Teams are about bringing people together to achieve a common goal, so individual egos must be cast aside. When you are part of a team, you must learn to take constructive criticism from coaches and teammates, and apply it to your athletic performance. That said, if you are the teammate who is giving constructive criticism or communicating critical instructions during the heat of a game, you must be clear and diplomatic in your communication. And having the self-awareness to know your own strengths while also recognizing the strengths and skills of others is an invaluable trait that can be developed on the playing field. All of these skills translate well to the workplace and your family at home. Not sure where to find a local team sport to join? Girl in Disguise By Jessica Asbell Do you know the name Kate Warne? How about Allan Pinkerton, founder of the Pinkerton Detective Agency? We know that Kate Warne was hired by Allan Pinkerton in 1856 as the first female Pinkerton Detective. She died in 1868 and was buried in the Pinkerton family plot. History also tells us that she helped save Abraham Lincolns life on the way to his inauguration in 1861. But that was all that history told us about this important figure. In her book entitled Girl in Disguise, Greer Macallister brings Kate Warne to life. She enters into Allan Pinkertons office, answering an advertisement for a detective. When told that he doesnt hire females as detectives, Kate simply responds, Somebody has to be first. Thus, Pinkerton takes a chance on Kate, a widow with a mysterious past. Kate begins her new life full of aliases, coded messages, and little support from the other detectives. When Abraham Lincoln is elected, its learned that there is a plot to assassinate him on his way to the inauguration. Thanks to the Pinkerton detectives, Lincoln is disguised as an invalid, and Kate transports him safely to D.C. and to his destiny. However, the country grows ever more restless and tense, eventually splitting at the Mason-Dixon Line. During the Civil War, the Pinkerton detectives are tasked with finding the spies among them. When an unexpected enemy betrays someone Kate cares for, Kate will have to choose whether to do what is expected of her or to follow her heart. Although little is known about the real Kate Warne, its easy to imagine her with the feisty personality that Macallister has given her in Girl in Disguise.

See the First U.S. Continental Total Solar Eclipse Since 1979! By David Dundee On Monday, August 21, 2017, be sure to block out the afternoon to catch an amazing, rare spectacle. Stretching from Salem, Oregon all the way to Charleston, South Carolina, the total solar eclipse will be a sight you wont get to see again across the U.S. until 2024. The metro Atlanta area will see between 95-97% of the Sun eclipsed. Locally, the eclipse will begin around 1:00pm EDT and reach a maximum at about 2:30pm EDT. The eclipse will end at 4:00pm EDT. The northeast portion of the state will be the closest path to see totality; however, the mountainous regions could be hindered by cloud coverage. Weather, of course, is a very important factor to consider when making your eclipse observation plans. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon is perfectly lined up between the Earth and the Sun. This can only happen at the time of a New Moon. Usually, there are two or three solar eclipses every year, but they are not all visible from our region. During the eclipse, the sky will appear much like it does at twilight. While it wont be totally dark, you will certainly notice that the Sun is not as bright as normal. Be cautious when driving. Better yet, make plans to NOT be driving, so you wont miss this fantastic astronomical event. For best observing, please remember the Sun is always dangerous to look at. Never observe the Sun without the proper filters and without someone with you who knows how to observe the Sun safely. Canton Family Life Publications Hosts Fade to Black! Community Partner: HopeQuest Ministry Group, Inc. Behind Every Addition is a Story Addiction is not a new problem, and those who have been affected by it know how damaging it can be to families and communities. Here in Cherokee County, HopeQuest has been helping individuals and families who have been impacted by addiction to experience freedom, hope, and life for over fifteen years. Since its start as a ministry helping local families, HopeQuest has become a non-profit, state-licensed, residential treatment center for drug, alcohol, and sexual addiction with separate, gender-specific programs for men and women. Because of HopeQuests unique and effective approach, which sets it apart from other treatment centers, local individuals and families as well as people from other states are turning to HopeQuest for help. HopeQuest believes that behind every addiction is a story, and the treatment approach is aimed at addressing core issues that drive addictive behavior. Since addiction is a complex problem, HopeQuests program is ninety days instead of 28. This gives clients a longer stabilization time and a better chance of succeeding in their recovery. A significant distinction is that its treatment approach is fully integrated in a Christ-centered and clinically effective model that addresses biological, emotional, psychological, and spiritual factors in order to treat the whole person. HopeQuests staff is made up of licensed counselors and therapists who view their work as a calling and genuinely care about the people who come for help. While clients are in treatment, HopeQuest also works with family members to address their needs for support and healing. In Cherokee County, HopeQuest has become a trusted partner for those facing the challenges of addiction. Because of the devastating impact of addiction in the community, HopeQuest is committed to making treatment accessible to those in need by underwriting up to 50% of each clients costs through the generosity of financial donors. HopeQuest staff members also consult with local church leaders, organizations and families to offer training, support and resources. Every week, the negative impact of addiction on families and communities is felt due to accidents, overdoses, divorces and tragic deaths. Each person struggling with addiction is someones son or daughter, mother or father, spouse or partner. The pain and loss resulting from addiction are devastating. Community Partner: Backpacks of Love A Blessing to Families in Need Homelessness and poverty have become much more visible and prevalent problems in suburban areas like northern metro Atlanta. In 2015, Forsyth County, one of Georgias wealthier counties as measured by per capita income, conducted its first ever survey of the homeless population. Backpacks of Love (BofL) serves homeless and at-risk children and their families in Forsyth and north Fulton counties. They work through social workers in Fulton and Forsyth County schools, who identify students who dont have enough food. BofL sponsors, largely in area churches and businesses, fill backpacks with food items, which are then delivered to schools for distribution. They deliver backpacks of food and other needed items to eighteen different schools (elementary, middle and high schools) in north Fulton and Forsyth Counties. Since its inception in 2011, BofL has delivered over 235,000 pounds of food and other essentials in approximately 11,750 backpacks. One of the high school social workers they work with recently wrote: Backpacks of Love has been an incredible blessing to our families in need. The families we serve through BofL express their gratefulness for the help, and we get thank you calls and notes throughout the year from parents. I firmly believe that our BofL program helps kids focus in school and ultimately helps many of them to make it to graduation. Thank you; thank you; thank you! BofL operates entirely through the stewardship of its sponsors and volunteer labor. They have no paid staff. Over 250 individual sponsors serve by filling backpacks of food or by making other donations. Seven different churches, St. Aidans Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, St. Columbas Episcopal Church, Johns Creek Baptist Church, Alpharetta First United Methodist Church, Roswell Missionary Baptist Church and Roswell Assembly of God have an organized effort within their churches to assemble sponsors and donations. Additionally, businesses and civic groups such as Morrow Family Medicine, Star Asset Security, Best Deal Movers, Travelers Insurance, Proactive Payroll, North Georgia Promotions, Bank of North Georgia, A Stronger Workplace, the Bond and Specialty Insurance division of Travelers Corp. (Alpharetta), the Johns Creek Rotary Club, the South Forsyth Rotary Club and the Milton/Windward Rotary Club have donated funds and/or organized collections of food, backpacks and other crucial items. BofL was named by Mimosa Elementary School as its Partner of the Year in 2012, and has also received a grant for backpack purchases from the Piney Grove Middle School PTSA. Manning Oaks Elementary selected BofL as its Partner of the Year in 2013, as did Elkins Pointe Middle School in 2014. BofL was selected as Taylor Road Middle Schools Partner of the Year for 2016, and BofL Founder, John Ray, was selected as 2015s Small Business Partner in Education of the Year by the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce. Secrets of Southern Girls By Annell Gerson Georgia author Haley Harrigans debut novel, Secrets of Southern Girls, is of the all-nighter variety. It is a story that grabs you from the first line of the prologue, She only has lovers in wintertime, and continues to twist, turn, circle back, stop, and punch forward, compelling you to read just one more chapter. Julie Portland is a happy five-year-old living in New York until her parents tragically die, and she is sent to Lawrenceville, Mississippi to live with relatives she doesnt know, and she meets fellow five-year-old neighbor, Reba. The two become instant best friends and remain so until one fateful night right before graduation. Its late and raining; a rendezvous is innocently arranged on a favorite, though rickety, bridge; Reba has not one boyfriend but two; a diary is meant to be handed off that will explain everything, as she can no longer love both. But bad timing collides with bad decisions, and Reba dies. Though officials call it an accident, Julie knows the truth; she never deserved Reba, and now she has killed her. Filled with crushing guilt, sorrow and loneliness, Julie runs to New York and tries to rebuild her life. When the novel begins, it has been ten years since the accident, yet Julie still punishes herself for that fateful night. She repeatedly sabotages all chances of happiness because in her mind, they are undeserved. And then, he finds her August, who also loved Reba. August, who also left town right after Rebas death. August, a young black boy, who loved a young white girl, in a small southern town where such love was not allowed. August tracks Julie down. It seems they are both victims of the same guilt. August cannot shake the shadow of his past because he, too, thinks he is responsible for Rebas death. Secrets of Southern Girls is wonderfully textured with the intrigue of secrets, bonds of friendship, intensity of young love, reality of racial tensions and the burden of personal guilt.
Artist Profile: Marilyn Sparks Painting Memories By Maria Klouda Old barns, regional landscapes and fields of flowers are just some of the images of the simplicities of the south that are lovingly created by Georgia artist, Marilyn Sparks.Marilyn retired from the fashion industry after thirty years of producing shows all over the country. The impact of off-shore competition and the growth of the internet changed the industry significantly. Instead of seeing the changes as the end of her career, Marilyn reinvented herself and began a second career as a successful artist. Coincidentally, theres a strong parallel between producing a fashion show and creating a piece of art. Both mediums create a picture. The first uses models, music and merchandise. The second is created with a canvas, paint and passion. Marilyn has never had a formal lesson, I just paint, she says. She admits she might have benefited from formal instruction, but she didnt want to be overly influenced by the process. Since Marilyn never learned the rules, she finds freedom in the ability to create art as it comes to her. Her first piece was painted on a scrap of canvas that had been a prop in a previous fashion show, using leftover house paint she found in the garage and brushes that she already had on hand. She knew she was on to something when she took one of her pieces to a frame shop, and the associate mentioned that they were familiar with the artist. Knowing that they couldnt be familiar with her work, Marilyn continued to paint in earnest. Beginning with acrylics, Marilyn eventually made the switch to oils. She began experimenting and became drawn to the smell, feel and texture of the medium. Her works are inspired by her memories. Summers spent on the family farm have influenced her art. Many of these iconic structures are disappearing from the landscape. Marilyn is overwhelmed with gratitude about her success as an artist. She is grateful and honored that clients would choose one of her paintings to hang in their home or business. Each piece is bold, bright, charming and peaceful, much like the artist behind the easel. Locally, her work can be found at Taylor Kinzel Gallery in Roswell. She also participates in the annual Spotlight on Art Gala and Auction, which is hosted by the Trinity School in Atlanta. Her work can also be found at High Country in Blue Ridge; The Summer House in Highlands, NC; Red Bird Gallery in Seaside, FL, and in six Grand Bohemian Galleries throughout the southeast. Marilyn does not sell direct to the public, but she accepts commissions. You can find more information online at MarilynSparks.com/.
