The month of May brings us Cinco de Mayo (5/5) for lighthearted Mexican-themed celebrations and Memorial Day (5/25) to pay tribute to our men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. May also brings us Mother's Day (5/10).
Motherhood is such a personal thing that looks different for each of us, based on our own set of circumstances and the unique gifts and challenges our children bring into our lives. Even those who are not moms have mothers or mother figures who nurtured them the best way they knew how.
Regardless of the role motherhood has played in our lives, there is no denying the impact it has on who we become and who our children become.
Religious leader and educator David O. McKay said, "Motherhood is the greatest potential influence either for good or ill in human life. The mother's image is the first that stamps itself on the unwritten page of the young child's mind. It is her caress that first awakens a sense of security; her kiss, the first realization of affection; her sympathy and tenderness, the first assurance that there is love in the world."
When described in that way, it's no wonder it often feels like the weight of the world rests on the shoulders of mothers. So, be sure to honor your momma on May 10 — and every other day of the year. And if you are a mom, I hope you get to relax and enjoy being celebrated.
And for those who are "moms/dads" to precious four-legged "fur kids," be sure to check out this month's feature about local dog parks on pages 20-21 to learn where you can spend quality time socializing with your pups.
Also, don't forget to make your voice heard on May 19, which is the Georgia Congressional, State, and Gubernatorial Primary Election.
Have a magnificent May!
